Jukjangdo [죽장도:竹杖刀] ~ Bamboo Long Sword
Jukjangdo is easy to walk with when climbing the mountains because it's very light and functionally-designed.
It looks like a stick outside. So it's not give a displeasure for the public.
It can change into a spear quickly, even if it looks like a cane from the outside.
It can protect oneself from the bandits and the beasts when walking or climbing the mountains.
It can use to defeat wild boars facing unexpectedly from the hiking, from the fields, from the orchards.
When pulled out the the blade from the Jukjangdo, it becomes the best performance sword for practicing kumdo [kendo].
This traditional Korean Jukjangdo indicates the historical significance of Chosun Dynasty sword in the 15th century. It's shape is the same as the Jukjang of four great warlords [Samyeoungdaesa], who is the famous chief righteous soilders (義兵).
This Jukjangdo is one of the best sword of Chosun Dynasty which is superior to the Chinese or the Japanese.
This Jukjangdo was used by Seosandaesa or Samyeoungdaesa whom were the Buddhist masters in Chosun Dynasty. They became the leaders of righteous soilders when the Japan invaded Korea.
It was mainly used as self-defence sword, but it also was used as a weapon when leading the righteous soilders during the battle of Imjin war.
This Jukjangdo was very useful self-defence weapon for the Buddhist monks when unexpectedly facing the danger of scary animals in the mountains.
Goryeo Sword Company was able to reproduce this multi-purpose functions as such: -
- It attached the trade mark of locking device between the blade and the scabbard for keeping the blade safe. - It’s used for self-defence stick for protecting feet from unknown snakes. - It is also used in a threatening weapon when swinging the stick, jukbong.
It’s made of a lightweight yet solid piece of Almasita wood carved in Bamboo patterning.
This hexagonal blade is good for cutting the tatami mats and one year old of bamboos. But the blade may not handle well the thick and old bamboos.
The scabbard is made of high quality Almasica wood carved in bamboo patterning by hand crafted.
Process of Artwork:
Using traditional Korean/Japanese disciplines and the strict guidelines, the blade [kitae] was forged by Jun Gi [Japanese famed swordsmith]. Jun Gi is an apprentice of famed swordsmith Kunimasa Matsuba of Miyazaki prefecture.
Cleaning the blade to make sure it is free of oil and impurities and then applies the special clay mixture [Yakibatsuchi] to the blade, which makes hamon by [*Lee SeungHO]. *He is Korea's top sword artisan for over 30 years of experience. [Yakibatsuchi] is the polishing stone powder ash or charcoal powder.
The blade is then heated up to 720~780 degrees and is quenched in water, which rapidly cools the edge to form martensite [the hardest type of steel] and slowly cools the body due to its thicker clay coating and forming ferrite and pearlite [softer and more flexible].
Basic togi [polishing] is then performed, along with any carvings/ personalizations to the body of the blade. Nakago [tang] is polished and the swordsmith's signature [Lee SeungHo] carved.
The blade is then handed over to our togishi [polisher], who uses multiple poishing stones to refine our katana.
The Saya(scabbard) was made of lightweight & solid Almasita wood hand carved bamboo patterning. The Saya is finished with a high gloss real lacquer.
